kahn and Sub-Zero. The game was co-developed by series creators John Tobias, Ed Boon and Jordan Perry, who previously worked on the series' second entry in the series, Mortal Kombat 2. The game features a revamped roster, new characters, character animations, fatalities, environmental hazards, additional moves, and a significantly revised combat system.
Gameplay
The 1995 rendition of Mortal Kombat is the first main game to use a 3D engine. The use of a 3D engine allows the developers to achieve more realistic graphics and character animations. The gameplay is essentially the same as Mortal Kombat II. Players use punches, kicks, and throws to attack and combinations of these moves to defeat enemies. Moves include the standard Mortal Kombat moves, such as the fatality finishing move, as well as new moves such as "Caduceus Burn" and a new Fatalities, involving a comet. Combos are performed by pressing specific buttons while performing an attack, and they usually involve a character's special moves.
Characters
The fifth main installment in the Mortal Kombat series features twenty playable characters. It also features a new character class named the "Sage" class. Every character class includes three variations, each with a unique combination of six special moves.
Reception
Although a major sequel, Mortal Kombat was not as critically acclaimed as previous games in the series. It was the first in the series to use the 3D engine, and it introduced new moves and Fatalities to the series. GamePro praised the game for its "tight and fluid" gameplay. A review for Next Generation gave the game three out of five stars.
Next Generation reviewed the PC version of the game, rating it four stars out of five, and stated that "Mortal Kombat is a worthy sequel, and with the new 3D graphics engine, it's going to be a blast to play."
Reviews
The 4Kids League Street Kids'' (collectively known as the Street Kids) debuted the game in 1996 and gave the game a rave review. The Street Kids described the game as "Bloody Awesome".
